University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men is currently seeking candidates for a Teaching Assistant position for the 2024-2025 school year.

TEACHER SUPPORT : University Prep has a strong operational team with student managers at each grade level who support student achievement through a disciplinary model that includes students’ families. Our graduating classes have exceeded a rate of 94% and all of our seniors have been accepted at 2 or 4 year colleges or training programs.

Job Description

POSITION:

The Teacher Assistant position provides a unique opportunity for talented individuals with limited or no experience in education to explore the field of education and to gain hands-on practice on supporting the mission critical work of teachers.  Teacher Assistants will have an opportunity to observe best practices in classroom instruction and education reform from experienced teachers and school leaders at a leading charter management organization. Teacher Assistants will support teachers with tutoring, grading, data analysis, and administrative support.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist teachers with instruction, assessments, grading, and other classroom responsibilities
  • Potentially teach small groups of students
  • Support students by providing one-on-one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support
  • Observe Master Teachers in order to improve instructional techniques and classroom management
  • Distinguishing features of the class: Teaching Assistants provide instructional support services to students under the direct supervision of a highly qualified teacher
  • Teaching Assistants provide direct instructional support to students as they develop social, communication and academic skills
  • Teaching Assistants assist in devising and implementing a motivational and behavior management system
  • Teaching Assistants ensure that any intervention/strategies are conveyed to the teacher while assisting in the implementation of those intervention strategies
  • Works with classroom teacher to plan and implement daily activities and prepare individualized materials for students
  • Provide assistance to teachers and students by demonstrating tasks and intervention strategies for all tasks
  • Assists in providing 1:1 instruction in a firm, consistent, supportive environment in a cooperative effort with the classroom teacher
  • Responsible for instruction of students consistent with IEP
  • Utilizes visual cues including symbols, pictures and simple sign language
  • Assists classroom teacher in implementing the Individualized Educational Program and Behavior Intervention Plans and strategies for students exhibiting unique communication, emotional, behavioral and learning needs
  • Identifies students who need intervention and will be targeted for intervention for that day
  • Assists with maintaining records, materials and equipment
  • Monitors and documents students progress (each student should have an individual folder for their progress graphs, attendance history, "points sheets", and behavioral and/or management problems)
  • Communicates effectively with the instructional team including classroom teacher, other professional staff, and parents
  • Ensures that the work environment is safe and accessible and that each workstation is ready for student learning
  • Assists in computer instruction
  • Teaching Assistant responds to any other duties as directed by the building Principal
  • Provide administrative support including but not limited to copies, hallway duty, organizing classroom materials, etc.

As appropriate, perform all duties expected of staff, including but not limited to:

  • Participating in grade-level activities, and school-wide functions, events, and trips
  • Providing consistent rewards and/or consequences for student behavior
  • Serving as an advisor to a small group of students 
  • Supervising students during transitions, breakfast, lunch, and afterschool
  • Communicating effectively with students, families, and colleagues
  • Participating in an annual three-week staff orientation and training.

  • A strong candidate will possess strong organizational skills, communication skills (particularly with children), and problem solving skills
  • Interest in performing a critical support role and the ability to excel in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, results-oriented environment
  • The teaching assistant must work in close and frequent physical proximity to the teacher
  • Prior experience working in schools and/or urban communities is preferred but not required
  • Relentless commitment to mission of educating urban students. Belief in and alignment with Uprep’s core beliefs and educational philosophy is non-negotiable
  • Associates degree is preferred, but not required.  A background in education is not required, though candidates should show a demonstrated passion for working with K-12 students

SALARY/SALARY RANGE :

The current salary range is $16.48 - $19.23 hr; negotiable based on level of education, experience, training, and certifications.
